How to Reach Hvar: Ferries, Routes, and Tips

Hvar is close enough to Split to feel easy, but it is still an island - and that changes the plan. Knowing how to reach Hvar means choosing the right port, ferry type, and arrival point before you book accommodation. A fast catamaran can put you in Hvar Town quickly, while a car ferry may bring you to Stari Grad, about 25 minutes away by road. Neither is automatically better. It depends on whether you are traveling light, bringing a car, arriving late, or planning to see more than the waterfront.

How to reach Hvar from Split

For most travelers, Split is the simplest and most flexible gateway to Hvar. Split Airport is well connected to major European cities in summer, and the port is a short transfer from the airport. For diaspora travelers arriving from the US, Canada, or elsewhere outside Europe, Split is often the most practical onward destination after a connection through a larger European airport.

From Split, you have two main choices: a passenger catamaran to Hvar Town or a vehicle ferry to Stari Grad.

Catamaran to Hvar Town

The catamaran is the best option if you are staying in Hvar Town, traveling with suitcases only, or simply want the fastest route. The crossing usually takes around one hour, depending on the service. You step off directly by the harbor, within walking distance of hotels, restaurants, the promenade, and many central apartments.

This is the route that looks easiest on paper, and often is. Still, it has limits. Catamarans do not take cars, and luggage rules can be stricter than travelers expect. If you are carrying oversized items, traveling with a stroller, or arriving with several bags for a family stay, check the operator’s current conditions before departure.

In July and August, book earlier than you think you need to. Afternoon departures can fill quickly, particularly on weekends when visitors are moving between Split, Hvar, and other islands. Arrive at the port with time to find the correct pier, rather than treating it like a train platform where you can show up two minutes before departure.

Car ferry to Stari Grad

If you have a rental car, your route is the ferry from Split to Stari Grad. Stari Grad is on the northern side of Hvar island and is not the same place as Hvar Town. The sailing is longer than the catamaran, generally close to two hours, but it is the sensible choice for anyone who wants their own vehicle on the island.

From Stari Grad, Hvar Town is roughly a 25-minute drive. Jelsa and Vrboska are closer, while the quieter southern side of the island takes longer to reach. This matters when comparing apartments: a lower rate in a village can stop looking like a bargain if you need frequent taxis back to Hvar Town.

In peak season, reserve a vehicle space in advance where possible and arrive well before sailing. Car ferries can be busy, especially on Saturday changeover days. A confirmed ticket does not always mean arriving at the last minute is wise. Island travel runs on capacity, weather, and summer traffic, not just timetables.

Reaching Hvar from Dubrovnik

A direct seasonal catamaran between Dubrovnik and Hvar Town can be an excellent option for travelers building a one-way Croatia itinerary. It avoids returning to Split simply to catch a ferry, and it lets you combine a few nights in Dubrovnik with an island stay without wasting a full day on the road.

The trade-off is frequency. Direct services are generally more common during the main summer season and may not run every day outside it. They are passenger-only services, so this is not the route for a road trip with a car. If your accommodation is in Stari Grad, Jelsa, or a remote bay, factor in the cost and availability of an onward transfer from Hvar Town.

For travelers coming from Dubrovnik Airport, this route can work very well, but do not schedule a tight same-day connection after a flight. Delays, airport transfers, and the need to collect luggage can turn a comfortable plan into an expensive overnight in town. If the last sailing is early, arriving in Dubrovnik the night before is usually the calmer choice.

Flying to Hvar: what actually works

Hvar does not have a commercial airport. The realistic airport choices are Split and Dubrovnik, with Split generally offering more ferry connections and greater flexibility.

If you are flying from the US, a route via a European hub to Split is usually the cleanest option. Travelers from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and other parts of Western Europe often find seasonal direct flights to Split especially useful. From the airport, take a taxi, prearranged transfer, or local transport to Split port, then continue by catamaran or ferry.

Avoid booking a flight that lands shortly before your intended sailing. Even when the airport-to-port journey is short, summer traffic and flight delays are real. A buffer of several hours is sensible; an overnight in Split may be better if you are traveling with children or arriving after a long-haul flight. Split is not just a place to pass through, and starting the island portion rested is worth more than squeezing every hour from the itinerary.

Choosing the right arrival port on Hvar

Many booking mistakes happen because travelers search “Hvar” and assume every ferry reaches Hvar Town. Before paying for transport, check both the departure port and the arrival port.

Hvar Town is best for a first visit, couples, nightlife, boat excursions, and travelers who want restaurants and beaches within easy reach. Stari Grad suits travelers with cars, families staying in larger apartments, and anyone who prefers a calmer historic town. Jelsa is a good base for a slower-paced eastern-side stay, while Sućuraj is mainly relevant for those arriving from the mainland near Drvenik.

If your property host says “near Hvar,” ask for the exact town. On an island, 20 kilometers can mean a winding road, limited late-night taxis, and a very different arrival experience.

If you are driving to Hvar

A car gives you freedom to explore vineyards, smaller coves, Stari Grad Plain, Jelsa, and less crowded parts of the coast. It also brings parking concerns, narrow streets, and a ferry reservation to manage. In Hvar Town, parking can be limited and expensive in summer, so confirm whether your accommodation has a space before bringing a vehicle.

For many visitors, the better compromise is to arrive on foot and rent a car or scooter for one or two days only if needed. That works particularly well if your base is Hvar Town and your priority is swimming, dining, and boat trips rather than covering the whole island. Families staying outside the main towns may find a car genuinely useful, especially for groceries and flexible beach days.

Do not rely on public buses for every movement. They can be useful between major settlements, but their schedules are not designed around every late ferry, beach club, or dinner reservation. If you land in Stari Grad late in the day, arrange your transfer ahead of time rather than assuming a taxi will be waiting.

Practical timing and packing advice

Ferry schedules change by season, and weather can affect services, particularly outside high summer. Check current departures again shortly before travel, not only when you first build the trip. If you have a flight home from Split, avoid taking the final possible ferry connection that morning. The risk is unnecessary when an earlier sailing or a night in Split protects the rest of the journey.

Keep essentials in a small bag: travel documents, medication, swimwear, chargers, and a light layer for the evening crossing. The sun can be intense on deck, but air-conditioned cabins can feel cool. If seasickness is a concern, choose a seat toward the center of the vessel and avoid arriving after a heavy meal.

Hvar rewards travelers who plan the transfer with the same care they give the hotel. Choose the port that matches your stay, leave room around flights, and do not bring a car by default. Once the ferry pulls away from the mainland, the holiday finally starts to feel like one.
