Skopje
The city on the banks of Vardar with two faces
Why visit Skopje?
Skopje is a city that leaves no one indifferent — a capital of dramatic contrasts where baroque-style monuments and sweeping suspension bridges built under the audacious 'Skopje 2014' project face the ancient Ottoman bazaar across the Vardar River, creating one of the most visually striking urban landscapes in the Balkans.
The Old Bazaar and Kale Fortress
Skopje's Old Bazaar (Stara Čaršija) is the largest and oldest bazaar in the Balkans after Istanbul's Grand Bazaar. Walking its winding lanes of traditional craft workshops, tea houses, and timber-framed restaurants is a genuine journey through time. From the bazaar, the path climbs to the Kale Fortress, where the finest panoramic view of the entire city unfolds — an extraordinary tableau of old and new, minarets and monuments, that is especially magical at sunset when the city begins to glow.
Nature and Escape Within Reach
Despite its urban energy, Skopje offers excellent escapes into the surrounding landscape. Just 15 kilometres from the centre, the dramatic Matka Canyon rewards visitors with emerald boat rides past cave entrances and vertical limestone walls draped in wild fig. Above the city, Mount Vodno and its Millennium Cross are reached by cable car, offering a bird’s eye perspective that reveals just how extraordinary this Balkan capital truly is.
Matka Canyon
One of the most beautiful natural spots in the Balkans, reminiscent of fjords, yet located just a stone's throw from the center of Skopje.
Old Bazaar
Immerse yourself in the oriental atmosphere, feel the true spirit of the Balkans, and taste the best kebabs in the city.
Monumental Architecture
The city is a truly unique open-air museum, thanks to controversial reconstruction projects of the central square.
